What is Legal Translation
When legal text or translation is mentioned, the first thing comes to mind might be court papers or law translations. Whereas, the context of legal translation is very wide; for example, all kinds of contracts such as sales contracts, main contracts, articles of incorporation, employment contracts, sales and leasing contracts and etc. and translation of several documents such as, expert reports, court orders, covenants, letter of attorney, list of authorized signatures, commercial registration gazettes, activity reports, income and expense charts, bank statements, land registry certificates, guarantee certificates, licenses, circulars, transcripts, diplomas, tender documents, all kinds of laws and regulations, guidelines, testaments, court orders of foreign countries, license certificates, annual reports and several similar translations are within the context of legal translation.
The important thing for translating all these documents is to know and have command on the laws of the source and target languages.
Therefore, it is important that the translators or interpreters doing legal translation have good command on correct terminology, form readable and understandable sentences who do not turn them into meaningless texts. The expression in the source language must be translated into the target one exactly. Another difficult aspect of legal translations is significant differences between laws and codes of countries. How it is necessary for a person who had law education in a foreign country to do his/her job in Turkey to have additional education and tests to work here and how a person who had a law education in Turkey to do his/her job in a foreign country to do the same, the translators and interpreters doing legal translation have similar responsibilities and they have to improve themselves continuously and follow changes in legal field .
